چکیده
Resolution improvements in dipolar resonant excitation have been examined in a round-rod quadrupolar collision cell for values of the Mathieu characteristic exponent beta equal to n/p, where n and m are small integers (prime beta values) versus other beta values where n and p are not small (ordinary beta values). The trajectories of ions moving in the time-varying electric fields of a quadrupole with and without buffer-gas molecules were calculated to determine the relationship of prime and ordinary beta values to frequency resolution for resonant ion excitation and ejection. For prime beta values, the ion trajectory in the hyperbolic quadrupole field will be exactly periodic with a period of at most 4 pi p/Omega, where Omega is the angular frequency of the main drive radio-frequency (RF) potential. Ion trajectory simulations with prime beta versus ordinary beta values show that the motion of ions with prime beta values have simpler trajectories of shorter periods. Frequency response profiles (FRPs) for round-rod quadrupoles at zero pressure show that dipolar resonant excitations with prime beta values exhibit significantly narrower bandwidths than those with ordinary beta values. Simulations show that at 0.05 to 0.8 mTorr of nitrogen, it is possible to reduce the FRP bandwidth by 20% (measured at 50% depth).

Parametric excitations of trapped ions in a linear rf ion trap
The parametric resonant behavior of ions inside a linear rf ion trap is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretically, the resonant motion of ions inside an ideal ion trap is described by approximating the trapping rf field as a harmonic pseudopotential with the ions being excited by an additional quadrupolar ac voltage. The resulting damped Mathieu equation is studied and the re...

Data-dependent external m/z selection and accumulation of ions is demonstrated in use with ESI-FTICR instrumentation, with two different methods for ion selection being explored. One method uses RF/DC quadrupole filtering and is described in use with an 11.5 tesla (T) FTICR instrument, while the second method employs RF-only resonance dipolar excitation selection and is described in use with a ...

A new ion sampling interface for an electrospray ionization 3D ion trap mass spectrometer system is described. The interface uses linear rf quadrupoles as ion guides and ion traps to enhance the performance of the 3D trap. Trapping ions in the linear quadrupoles is demonstrated to improve the duty cycle of the system. Dipolar excitation of ions trapped in a linear quadrupole is used to eject un...

We describe the construction and operation of a segmented linear Paul trap, fabricated in printed-circuit-board technology with an electrode segment width of 500μm. We prove the applicability of this technology to reliable ion trapping and report the observation of Doppler-cooled ion crystals of 40Ca with this kind of trap. Measured trap frequencies agree with numerical simulations at the level...
متن کاملNumerical study of spin - dependent transition rates within pairs of dipolar and exchange coupled spins with s = 12 during magnetic resonant excitation
The effect of dipolar and exchange interactions within pairs of paramagnetic electronic states on Pauliblockade-controlled spin-dependent transport and recombination rates during magnetic resonant spin excitation is studied numerically using the superoperator Liouville-space formalism. The simulations reveal that spin-Rabi nutation induced by magnetic resonance can control transition rates whic...
